What to do when everything sucks.

Life can be well, soul crushing. Whether it’s existential dread, daily stressors, relationship challenges, grief, or hard/traumatic experiences, life throws a lot at us. Or as I like to say, “life be lifein’”. To experience a wide range of feelings and sensations, some wonderful and pleasant, some that have the potential to destroy us, is what being human is all about. We all experience high highs, and low lows. Believe me, I wish life was all the good stuff, however the painful parts offer us something special. They offer us an opportunity to be courageous, to choose to live a life of integrity and love even when it’s scary. And I think that is nothing short of magical. Being alive is beautiful, silly, fun, connective, dark, twisted, and lonely all in the same life.

We talk a lot about living a life in alignment with your values. That is exactly what you can fall back on when everything sucks. You can connect with your loved ones and engage in a sense of community. You can play, be silly, and have fun. We tend to forget how healing that can be when we are going through a hard time. When everything sucks, remember that is part of the human experience sometimes, like it or not. In this practice of acceptance, you can then engage in your own values. Maybe one of your values is freedom, so you get out of the house and do something different so you don’t feel trapped. Maybe you value health so you go take a walk and cook a nutritious meal. No matter what you choose, it will soothe your soul when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. And remember, no action is too small and you are full of love. Accessing this love inside you can be the nightlight on a dark night.

Questions to ponder.

  • What’s one loving action I can do today?

  • What’s one value of yours you want to engage in today?

  • How can you spread more love in a world that sometimes sucks?
